Independent Building Group has been named a Master Builders award winner in the Regional category for our Balmoral Ridge project.
The project involved the comprehensive renovation and extension of an 80+ year old Queenslander, originally relocated from South Brisbane to Balmoral Ridge in the 1970s. A previous addition was demolished to make way for significant structural works and a new extension, creating expansive living areas, a new laundry and a generous master suite complete with walk-in robe, ensuite, WC and private balcony, along with a new triple garage.
A key focus was ensuring the new and existing areas worked cohesively while retaining the character of the original Queenslander. Extensive structural and framing upgrades were completed throughout the 80+ year old home, alongside a complete internal reconfiguration, new cedar windows, weatherboard cladding and carefully considered architectural detailing.
The elevated site and busy intersection presented additional construction challenges, including restricted access, significant weather events and a site closure during Cyclone Alfred. Despite these challenges, the project was delivered within its 10-month construction program and on budget.
The finished home brings together retained and repurposed elements of the original building with custom joinery, handmade tiles, antique brass finishes and improved thermal and acoustic performance transforming what was once a dark and uninviting house into a light, warm and considered home.

For Balmoral Ridge, the judges looked beyond the finished spaces. They assessed the quality of the workmanship and finishes, how well the home functions, and the technical, structural and environmental challenges involved in transforming an ageing Queenslander.
Winning a Regional Award recognises the skill, planning and construction expertise required to give this home a new lease on life, while respecting its original character and creating a home that better suits the way its owners live today.
For our team, it also reflects the standard we bring to every renovation and extension project careful planning, attention to detail and hands-on involvement from our Director and Builder, Michael, from the first conversation through to handover.
